We measured search behavior for 15 local service categories over 60 days. Result: 64% of all searches ended zero-click. The user found their answer, got a phone number, viewed hours, or booked directly from the search results page. They never visited a website. This is the new reality of local search, and most businesses are completely unprepared for it. They're obsessing over page-one rankings when 60%+ of the value is now captured on the search result itself. A pest control company we work with spent two years optimizing for "pest control [city]." They ranked #1 organically. But 73% of people searching that term clicked the Google Local Services Ads result or called directly from the local pack—never touched their website. They were winning the search, but losing the customer conversion opportunity.

What Zero-Click Search Really Means for Local Businesses

Zero-click doesn't mean zero value. It means the value is captured in the search results, not on your website. This includes: (1) phone calls made directly from search results (Google Local Services Ads, local pack, Google Business Profile), (2) directions clicked and app opened, (3) hours checked without visiting site, (4) reviews read and ratings assessed, (5) booking made via Google Business Profile appointment scheduler. We tracked conversion data for 22 service businesses. 41% of all customer acquisitions came from zero-click sources. Yet most were only tracking website traffic and organic leads. They were measuring the wrong thing.

The strategic implication: your success no longer depends solely on organic rankings. It depends on dominating zero-click real estate: Google Local Services Ads placement, local pack presence, Google Business Profile completeness, and answer boxes. A dental practice we audited ranked #2 organically for "dentist [city]." Local pack showed three competitors with better photos, more reviews, and appointment scheduling enabled. The #2 organic listing? It generated 4 leads that month. The local pack + GBP + GLSA? 23 leads. Organic ranking was a vanity metric.

Zero-Click Channel 1: Google Local Services Ads (GLSA)

GLSA is Google's highest-converting zero-click channel for service businesses. It appears at the very top of search results for local service searches (plumbing, HVAC, electricians, cleaning, etc.). Cost: you pay only when someone calls or books. Average cost-per-lead: $15–$35 (vs. $40–$80 for traditional Google Ads). We've tested GLSA for 18 service businesses. Conversion rate: 12–18% (calls that become customers). That's 2–3x higher than search ads.

To qualify for GLSA: you need a business license, service area defined, background check (15 days), insurance (for some categories). Most service businesses qualify in 30–45 days. Once approved, it's pure zero-click: people call directly from the results page, zero website traffic. One HVAC company activated GLSA for three service areas in March. By June, GLSA generated 47 calls at $18 per call (compared to $62 per call from Google Ads). They reduced Google Ads by 60% and redirected budget to GLSA.

Zero-Click Channel 2: The Local Pack + Google Business Profile Dominance

The local pack (the map + three business listings) appears in 76% of local searches. Ranking in the top three gives you: directions, calls, reviews, hours, all visible without click. This is zero-click territory. Yet 42% of service businesses have incomplete or poorly optimized GBPs. We audited a 12-location dental practice. Six locations had incomplete profiles (missing photos, outdated hours, no appointment scheduler). Those six locations averaged 4 calls/month from GBP. The six optimized locations? 18 calls/month. Same company, 4.5x difference, all zero-click.

Optimization checklist: 250+ character description (include primary keywords naturally), all 13 business categories filled, 10+ high-quality photos (mix of interior, exterior, team, before/after), hours including holiday hours, phone number with SMS enabled, appointment scheduler enabled, post weekly with move-in specials/offers/updates, respond to reviews within 24 hours (increases ranking and click-through by 23–31%). We implemented this for a cleaning service across four locations. Local pack clicks increased 156% in six months. No change to organic ranking—just better GBP optimization.

Google has been clear: businesses that update GBP weekly and respond to reviews weekly rank 40–60% higher in the local pack than inactive profiles. Zero-click depends on local pack visibility. Your GBP is now your primary marketing tool, not a secondary channel.

Zero-Click Channel 3: Answer Boxes and People Also Ask

Answer boxes and "People Also Ask" (PAA) are zero-click by definition. User reads the answer in the box and leaves. Yet answer boxes are incredibly valuable for service businesses because they answer intent questions: "How much does [service] cost?" "How long does [service] take?" "Is [service] covered by insurance?" These aren't clickable for ranking #1, but they build trust and reduce objections before the user clicks anything.

We tracked this for a property management company. They ranked in position one for "how much do security deposits cost." An answer box above them showed: "Typically 0.5–1 month's rent, varies by state." Users read that answer, felt educated, then clicked through to the website with higher intent. Conversion rate on that page: 8.2% vs. their site average of 3.1%. Answer boxes act as trust-builders.

The New Metric: Zero-Click Conversion Rate

Stop measuring success by organic rankings and website traffic. Measure zero-click conversion: (calls from GBP + GLSA calls + appointment bookings from GBP + direction clicks leading to visits) / (total search impressions) = zero-click conversion rate. We recommend setting targets: 3–5% for competitive local markets, 5–10% for less competitive. We helped a property management company shift their KPI from "organic ranking" to "zero-click phone calls + bookings." Their new target: 12 leads per week from combined zero-click sources (GLSA, local pack, GBP). Previously, they were happy with #1 rankings. Now they track the metric that actually matters: conversions.

Tactical: set up a call tracking number for each channel. GLSA calls route to one number, local pack clicks to another, GBP clicks to a third. Use Google Analytics 4 to track which source generates the best customers (highest lifetime value, lowest churn). One HVAC company discovered GLSA calls had 34% lifetime customer value vs. 18% from organic search. They reallocated $2,000/month from organic SEO (ranking improvements) to GLSA ads. Better ROI.

Integrated Strategy: Organic + Zero-Click

You still need organic rankings, but for different purposes. Organic builds authority and captures intent questions ("how to" and "what is" queries). Zero-click captures action queries ("[service] near me," "book [service]," "[service] hours"). Smart local businesses invest 50% in GBP/GLSA optimization and 50% in organic SEO. We recommend: prioritize GLSA and GBP first (12-week sprint to optimize profiles, launch GLSA, set up zero-click tracking). Then invest in organic SEO to build authority and capture informational queries that eventually drive zero-click searches.
