Your business name, address, and phone number exist in dozens of directories: Google Business Profile, Yelp, Apple Maps, industry-specific directories, local chamber sites, and aggregator networks. These are citations. Each citation is a signal to search engines that your business is real, active, and accurately described.

Citation freshness has always mattered for local pack rankings. AI overview systems make it more critical. When an AI system decides which business to feature in an answer, it weighs recency signals heavily. A citation updated six months ago signals that the business is actively managed. A citation unchanged for two years signals dormancy. AI systems penalize dormant businesses.

What counts as a citation update

A citation update is any change to your business information on the directory that reflects current facts. Updating your hours counts. Adding a new phone number for a new location counts. Changing your website URL counts. Adding a service category counts. Editing your business description counts.

Claiming or verifying a citation without making changes does not count as a substantive update. You must alter information that crawlers notice. Small edits are better than none. Rewording your business description without changing its meaning still signals that you reviewed and maintained the citation.

Citation decay timeline for AI visibility

This timeline is not documented by Google or other platforms, but the pattern holds across directories and appears in AI-driven ranking outcomes. Businesses that refresh citations quarterly maintain higher visibility in AI overviews. Businesses that update once a year lose momentum.

Citation freshness signals activity. AI systems trust active businesses. A dormant citation is not just unhelpful. It actively harms ranking.

Prioritize high-impact citations for updates

You cannot update every citation monthly. Prioritize the directories that feed AI systems directly: Google Business Profile first, then industry-specific directories (Healthgrades for medical practices, Avvo for law firms, Angie's List for contractors, etc.), then general directories like Yelp and Apple Maps.

Secondary citations on aggregator networks matter less for freshness because they often pull data from primary sources. If you update Google Business Profile and Healthgrades, the data often cascades to other directories automatically. Update the source before the copy.

What to update on a refresh cycle

Plan quarterly updates. In Q1, update your hours and confirm they are current. In Q2, refresh your service list and add any new offerings. In Q3, update your business description or photos. In Q4, confirm phone numbers and verify your address.

Rotate updates so every citation receives at least one substantive change every three to four months. Small updates accumulate and signal consistent management. Large rewrites every six months work less well than incremental changes every quarter.

Monitor citation freshness in AI search results

Search your service type and location in Google Search and other AI search engines. When your business appears in an AI overview or answer, note whether it appears frequently, rarely, or not at all. If appearance drops over a three-month period, your citation freshness has likely declined.

Use Google Business Profile's Insights to track when customers view your profile. A decline in profile views often precedes a decline in AI overview visibility. When you see the decline, refresh your top citations immediately. Freshness updates can restore visibility within weeks.
